Meeting up friends down under
Monday, July 13, 2009 x 1:00 PM

This was the Korean hot pot we had for dinner. Couldn't take a better shot cause the place was really dim. And flash was too bright. Oh well. Just use a little imagination to visualize a nice Korean hot pot. ;)

Cheap thrill.
I guess many would know that during my trip, I didn’t bring my phone cause M1 could not activate my roaming and I was thinking, huh, then how to meet my friends? When I boarded the plane, I convinced myself that perhaps it is not that important to meet my 3 friends in Australia. We can always meet another time isn’t it or when they are back.
Surprisingly, I could use my dad’s iphone so I was emailing them about my situation etc when I got there. Jo couldn’t meet up cause she was in the midst of exams, but we bumped into each other on the train!!! That was pretty cool. Talk about a large Asian community down under. Haha. Perhaps it is the Australian culture to not talk much on the train and just stone, but when we met on the train, we were babbling on and and on until she she missed one stop! Really wish we had more time for each other babe.
Meeting Daniel was kind of impromptu cause he too was having exams. But 3 days before I flew off, I finally managed to give him a call. All the area code is so confusing. We were both trying to sms each other but we couldn’t get through until Marc helped me with the area code. On top of that, Uncle gave me the wrong address just before I flew off hence a wrong area code as well. You can tell how last minute our meeting up was. So ridiculous right!
Went for brunch at Perth’s Chinatown with Marc at Tim Sum restaurant and goodness then shopped around in Perth City. There’s something about the servings in Australia, it is so big that one serving is enough to feed 2-3 people!!!! Totally worth your money especially when out in a big group! Saw some of the coolest black dresses and also one of the most expensive ones with the number of zeroes behind especially at Meyer, the biggest shopping centre in Perth, but I enjoy the small little quirky things that they sell. So exciting to spy with my little eye. Haha. ☺
Met Daniel in the afternoon and I think we visited every shopping mall in Perth City. We didn’t really shop, we were just walking around aimlessly cause the things there were really expensive!! And he’s seriously the typical Australian, we could have walked over to Chinatown, which would take 10 minutes in the nice cold but he decided we should drive there. So fine, we drove there and still walking around aimlessly, we saw rainbow!! AGAIN!! Apparently there was a double rainbow but I could only see one. Haha. We looked a little ridiculous stopping in our tracks randomly to look at rainbow while all the other Australians just walked by without a second glance at the sky.
We did a lot of Asian things when we met, like going to the arcades, drank bubble tea, ate Korean hot pot, shopped, and ate ice cream…
Dear me, I usually don’t go Arcade unless I am dragged by the terrorists or I have lost my marbles but we were desperate to seek shelter cause it suddenly poured on us so went in and decided to play game. Haha. I am PATHETIC at the games I think I was wasting his money, and half the time I lost either because I was laughing too hard or my lack of swift action of my hands caused the disc to go into my own goal. -_- What a loser. Haha.
Looking back, I think we were quite mad. We drank bubble tea, sat near the door and ended up feeling very cold, then we went for hot pot to keep warm, after which, we visited the ice cream parlor TWICE to taste the flavours and decided we were too full to stuff our face silly. And partly because he thought I was insane to eat ice cream in the cold.
So we went to Garden City(sounds like a Singapore Shopping Centre seriously), played pacman and shopped. After combing the entire area, we decided we were really bored, and so we had ice cream on some bridge that had lousy foundation, and chat; at the same time worrying if the bridge will collapse!!! Half way through, I think we were asking ourselves why in the world were we torturing ourselves cause we were cold to the bones. But it was fun savouring our ice cream for a super long time cause the ice cream didn’t melt in the cold! ☺ I go for cheap thrills.
When I travel, I make it a point to make sure I soak in the culture, be more sensitive to the weather, be more adventurous by doing things that I have never done, or not able to find/do back home, and give myself some time off to hear my own thoughts and heart.
Meeting up with Marc allowed me to really be immersed in this whole Australian culture, and meeting up with Daniel was doing more of the unexpected and going for cheap thrills. HAHAHA…Like getting lost and guessing our way around figuring how to get back home.
Still, I would say it was rather fun… next summer, I am going on a road trip with friends!
